What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of mind-body conditioning that emphasizes muscular balance, strength, and flexibility. Pilates focuses on recruiting your deep core body muscles, and helps restore the natural curves of your spine. Strength is tied to purpose. You learn to work with your body, not against it. You are teaching your body lessons of correct form and technique that will stay with you for a lifetime.
What is STOTT-PILATES?
Developed by former professional dancer Moira Stott-Merrithew, and with input from Sports Medicine Professionals, STOTT-PILATES is a contemporary approach to Joseph Pilates’ original exercise method. STOTT-PILATES incorporates modern exercise principles, and provides more modifications to make the method safer and more effective.
Who can do Pilates?
While it is always good to check with your health care professional before beginning any exercise program, Pilates is a form of movement that almost anyone can do. The beauty of Pilates is that it can be adapted to suit most any body. At a professinal level, dancers, skaters, golfers, and other athletes are using Pilates to condition their bodies. Many people just getting started in an exercise program are also enjoying the benefits of Pilates. Those dealing with arthritis, fibromyalgia, or injuries can also benefit since the movements are non-jarring and easy on the joints. The regular exerciser such as runners, cyclists, or swimmers can also enjoy Pilates.
What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
While Pilates and Yoga are both a form of mind-body conditioning, there are differences between the two. Yoga focuses more on static postures and holding the postures for a brief period of time. Pilates focuses on flowing into a movement, then flowing out of it. Pilates back breathing also helps to focus on keeping the core body stable, while Yoga emphasizes more of a belly breathing to help relax into postures. Yoga will also usually include a period of relaxtion or meditation at the end of class. Pilates classes usually do not include this aspect.
What kind of results or benefits can I expect to see with Pilates?
-improved posture and flexibility
-increase core stability and control
-develop muscular balance and correct overtraining
-longer, leaner muscles without the bulk
-no impact, easy on the joints
-learn how to breathe and relieve tension
-promotes improved body awareness and a better quality of life
Will I lose weight by doing Pilates?
While participating in a Pilates program will tone your entire body, you will not lose weight by doing Pilates alone. In more advanced levels, you will start to elevate your heart rate: however, Pilates is not a complete form of cardiovascular exercise. When combined with some kind of cardiovascular activity, such as biking, swimming, or running, Pilates can help to achieve a well-rounded exercise program.
What’s the benefit to paying more money and attending a class when I can do a Pilates video at home?
While books and videos are excellent resources, there are many added benefits to attending classes from a qualified instructor. With a video, you don’t often know if you are doing the exercises correctly. When you attend a class, you get hands-on attention that helps you to perform the exercises safely and correctly. Doing the exercises correctly will then make your workout more efficient. Videos will often follow a much quicker pace and often don’t break down the Pilates principles and techniques that are integral to learning this form of movement properly.
